Among the most interesting gas phase applications is SO2 elimination from a gas stream ans its recovery as diluted sulphuric acid. SO2 gets adsorbed in the nanoporous structure and is catalytically converted into SO3 in the presence of O2. After saturation, a water stream is past through the adsorption bed which extracts the adsorbed SO3 as SO4H2 while the monolith bed is regenerated. This is known as the SULFACID PROCESS. The adsorbent currently used in this technology is granular activated carbon (GAC) due to its high surface area and its chemical and physiscal resitance, but pressure drop is a big drawback in high throughput applications. Activated carbon honeycombs currently in market are by extrusion of a paste made of powdered AC, clays and plastifiers. This technology produces honeycomb with low surfaces areas (<600 m2/g), partly blocked diffusion pores, poor or no resistance to water and mechanical weakness. With NANOLITH NQHM GAC and current AC honeycombs drawbacks are overcome making them the best choice for this kind of applications.
